Would be nice to rank them up though like Red Alert and Cannon Fodder going even further back into RTS prehistory!

Using wyteraven's monk hack combined with auras you can do some interesting things involving units getting stronger by killing other units. There are restrictions on what you can do though. I can explain in more detail if you want.

To my knowledge, though, nothing like this is yet intentionally coded in the game or mod.

Well...

You could have the units accumulate some resource like cattle and then have them have different animfiles in the proto which could make them obtain at least faster rate of fire over time.

How does changing the model change rate of fire?

You can either change the firing animation or, for it to be flawless, make it shoot multiple missiles as it improves.

You can change the firing animation but how does this change the actual rate of fire in proto...? And how does changing models/animation change projectiles defined in proto and tactics?
Am I missing something?

Check the Chu-ko-nu or the Organ Gun, them firing multiple projectiles is defined on the Animfile

Yes, because of the launchpoints on the models, but the damage they do, the actual rate of fire, those are in proto and tactics.

Not quite, each missile does damage, so increasing the amount of missiles the fire does actually increase the damage they do.

Attack entries in anim files. I get it now. Still hard to make it work with the current anims but the possibility is there.
