Number of Settlers/Villagers

Sat Sep 08, 2018 4:40 pm

I was wondering how many settlers/villagers one recruits during gameplay. I think a group of 60-70 settlers is a good amount. What do you think?

Ok, so the general consensus is between 60-70. I always thought it was weird seeing more then that. Sure it's great for your economy, but I would think it would be a hinderance to their military. By the way how do you guys split up your villagers to gather resources? Eventually I split mine up so that twenty are gather food, wood, and coin with between two-four praying at the temple.

Well, that depends on the civ, the strategy, the number of enemies/allies and sometimes the enemy civ(s). You can't allow yourself to task villagers on gold after age 2 if you are playing incas.

Your economy should be very flexible. If you're focusing too much on set ratios of gatherers for each resource, then you're doing it wrong. Ideally you should be switching villagers around to gather different resources constantly, depending on what you need at that moment. At least until the very late game. Same goes for how many villagers you should have. Stop when you have enough to sustain all the military production you need. That number is extremely variable, but that's part of the fun of the game. Economy macro shouldn't have easy, "give me a number" answers.
