I doubt there will be that much overlap in the timelines of AoE4 and this mod. At the earliest AoE4 will probably start with WWI.

I don't think Ancient Empires was cancelled; there was another mod that was cancelled that was going to remake AoE1 in AoE3.

Anyway, we don't even know the timeline yet of AoE4, and:
  1. I really don't think it's going to focus on the same era. For whatever reason, the latter half of the 19th century that this mod primarily covers hasn't entered into popular culture to the extent that earlier time periods (Classical antiquity, Medieval period, Age of Exploration/Napoleonic era) have, or the later World War years. Therefore AoE4 will probably skip over much of said time period (which AoE3 already partially covered and this mod just expanded on) and start with the more popular World Wars, like I said.
  2. AoE4 isn't coming out for awhile. My guess is a long time, with all the other AoE projects they've announced going on simultaneously.
Either way, there's no reason to cancel this mod prematurely, if at all.

If anything Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition is a bigger threat, but I'd just lean on the "we'll just not support it."

I'm cautiosly optimistic about AoE4, Relic Entertainment is interesting, wonder how close it'll be to CoH, if any.

Relic is not the problem, I am actually relived there's a company with experience doing it. They also did Warhammer Dawn of War 1 and 2, and 1 is basically a classic, base building RTS. 2, not so much.

AoE3 DE is the problem.

I think the AOE 3 DE will be more like "extend version" to the original Aoe 3 rather than a standalone game, much like the Aoe II HD released back then.

I don't think AoE IV will be much threat to the AoE 3 modding, as currently no mod focus on WW I or II. The victorian era is indeed not among the most popular era for RTS gaming. But I am really confused with this AOE 3 DE. Isn't the game already definitive, uh?

Age of Empires HD Edition mod was canceled because of our team did not see a point in doing something that came out in the official version which is AoE1 Definitive Edition.

In my opinion WoL is too big mod to be canceled now, despite AoE3 DE which won't to have countries, cultures, units. maps from around the World like in WoL.
